Summary of Act Three
The setting of act three is in the Salem church, which has been turned into the courtroom. John Procter is being accused of witchcraft and so is Martha Corey. While John Procter is in court he finds out his wife Elizabeth is pregnant. Giles tells the court that Martha is being accused for reading fortunes. Giles also accuses Tom Putnam for telling his daughter to tell everyone in town that George Jacobs is also a witch. He doesn’t know that Mr. Jacobs is already in jail. Abigail is going on a rant about Goody Procter for having poppets and that she keeps stabbing her in the stomach with a needle, she also accuses Mary Warren of becoming a bird and attacking her. With Mary Warren doesn’t want to be hanged so she sides with Abigail and goes against Procter. Elizabeth is now pleading to the court that John is innocent and says that he is not guilty for cheating on her but John already told the truth and Danforth puts Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey and Procter in jail.
